Recalling Remembrance Sunday 2024 at Fulford Nursing Home

Residents and staff at Fulford Nursing Home in York came together on Sunday, the 10th of November, to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Remembrance Sunday is a sombre and significant date in the calendar, and it’s particularly meaningful for nursing home residents, as many still recall the conflicts and the lives affected.

Here’s how our residents marked the occasion.

Sunday

At 11:00 am on Sunday, our care staff, nurses, and residents proudly donned their poppies and assembled in the lounge to observe a respectful, reflective two-minute silence.

Tea and cake followed, with many choosing to watch the Remembrance memorial service and procession on television. Some of our residents even shared stories of the brave ex-servicemen and women in their families. Most of our residents are now the children of those who served, so they reflected on their parents’ experiences in the war.

Monday

“On the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, we pause to remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Lest we forget”.

We once again observed an impeccable two minutes of silence on Monday to mark Armistice Day and commemorate the end of the First World War.

The rest of the day was spent socialising, sharing stories, and participating in arts and crafts activities.

“Service, Not Self”

The theme of Remembrance 2024 is “Service, Not Self”, which has resonated with many of our care staff.

Our Managing Director, Elizabeth Hancock, said: “The idea of putting service before self is an ethos we share here at Fulford. We’re so proud of our ex-servicemen and women, and it’s an honour to be able to care for them and their loved ones here in our family-owned and run nursing home.”
