Celebrating our incredible nursing staff: International Nurses Day at Fulford Nursing Home

Every year on 12th May, International Nurses Day gives us a chance to pause and acknowledge the incredible people who keep nursing homes like ours running. This year, we’re turning the spotlight on our incredible nursing team who help make Fulford a functional, safe, warm, and enjoyable place to live.

In this short blog post, we celebrate the people who give so much of themselves day in, day out to our residents and their families.

Why this day matters

Nursing as a profession has always demanded more than just clinical know-how. It requires patience on difficult days, attentiveness to the smallest changes in a resident’s mood or health, and the ability to offer comfort in deeply personal moments.

There’s a reason International Nurses Day is marked on the 12th of May each year: It’s the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. Her tireless work and dedication laid the foundations of modern nursing, and hers is a legacy worth remembering.

For us here at Fulford, it’s a chance to say, loud and proud, that what our nurses do matters greatly to our residents, their families, and to everyone who walks through our doors.

The beating heart of Fulford: Our nursing and care team

The work our nurses do each day is far broader than many people realise. Yes, there’s the medical side of things, administering medication, monitoring health conditions, coordinating with GPs and specialists, and responding calmly and quickly when situations change.

But alongside that is another, often unseen, but equally important type of care. It’s knowing that one resident likes her curtains opened before she has breakfast. Remembering that another finds the afternoon harder than the morning and might require a helping hand. Or sensing when a family member needs a little more reassurance during a visit.

These are the intangibles that don’t always appear in care plans or handovers. They’re learned over time because our nurses pay attention, are present, and genuinely care for the people they look after. At Fulford, those relationships are something we’re very proud of.

Going above and beyond

Caring for elderly residents, particularly those living with dementia or complex health needs, requires a particular kind of courage alongside compassion. It means sitting with someone through a frightening moment, delivering difficult news to a family with sensitivity and honesty, and returning the following morning ready to do it all again.

For the families of our residents, we hope this offers some reassurance: your loved ones are looked after by people who take their responsibilities seriously and find real meaning in their work.

What our residents and families tell us

It’s one thing for us to speak about our team, but it’s the voices of our residents and their families that tell the full story. Time and again, we hear gratitude for the standard of care and appreciation for the quality of the relationships being built, whether it’s during a respite visit or a long-term stay.
