New Year, new joy: Six achievable New Year’s resolutions for seniors in 2026

The decorations have come down, but spirits remain high as we look forward to a fun and fulfilling 2026 here at Fulford Nursing Home

One of our favourite ways to kick off the New Year with our residents is to share our resolutions for the year ahead. In this short blog post, we’re sharing six inspirational, achievable goals seniors can set for themselves over the next 12 months.

From testing your taste buds to trying your hand at a new hobby, there’s something here for everyone.

Six resolutions for seniors to attempt in 2026

1. Pick up a pen, pencil, or paintbrush

Creativity comes in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes it’s as simple as picking up a pen (or pencil, or paintbrush) and expressing yourself with some paper or canvas. Scribbling a short story, sketching, or splashing watercolours can boost fine motor skills, improve confidence, and reduce stress. Start small by doing this once a week, and build the habit from there.

2. Start snapping photos

If drawing/painting isn’t your thing, you might find your creative outlet through the lens of a camera (or smartphone) instead. You could even set up an Instagram account or an online photo album and share your pictures with friends and family.

3. Start (or join) a book club

Reading more is always a popular New Year’s resolution, and forming or joining a book club can be a great way to encourage you to get started. Start small (4-6 members), choose a book, and arrange a time to meet and discuss it. You can search online for discussion questions to guide the meeting. Many book clubs typically meet once a month, giving members plenty of time to finish and reflect on the book.

4. Connect over Lego

Adult Lego sets have never been more popular, and they offer a great new hobby for seniors looking to challenge themselves. The small pieces are perfect for improving hand-eye coordination and concentration, and the variety in scale and theme across the sets means there’s something for everyone: from recognisable landmarks like the Eiffel Tower to famous vehicles, like James Bond’s Aston Martin. It’s also a lovely way to spend quality time building together with friends or family (especially grandchildren).

5. Set and hit a step goal

Moving more as you get older isn’t always easy, but it doesn’t have to be daunting. If you still have good mobility, setting yourself a daily step goal and trying to meet it can be a great way to work out your joints and muscles. You could even use a smartwatch or fitness tracker to keep track of your steps and enjoy some friendly competition with friends and family. According to a recent study, one longer walk a day is better for your health than lots of short strolls.

The NHS suggests that older adults should do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week. Read the walking for health guide for tips on getting started.

6. Try new foods

It’s never too late to expand your palate. Make 2026 the year you sample foods (and drinks) you’ve never had before. Take a cookery class, grab a recipe book from the library, or look up tutorials on YouTube. Or, if you’d prefer to leave it to the experts, eat out at or order in from a local restaurant that serves cuisine you’ve always wanted to try.
