7 senior-friendly activities in and around York

As the oldest family-run nursing home in York, we’re deeply proud of our roots and our city.

And while many of our residents are local to the area, some have relocated from further afield to be closer to family.

That’s why we love to get out and explore York and its surrounding areas with our residents, regularly organising day trips and activities.

Here, we share seven of our favourite day trip ideas for seniors in and around our hometown.

Day trip ideas for seniors in York

1. Marvel at York Minster

The second-largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, York Minster is a stunning staple of the city skyline. Seen from miles around, it’s a must-visit attraction and draws crowds from near and far, all year round.

Join a guided tour to learn about the building’s history and architecture, explore the undercroft museum, or take a moment of quiet reflection in the gorgeous gardens.

Tickets for seniors are £16, while York residents can visit for free with proof of address.

2. Potter Around the York Museum Gardens

Set alongside the peaceful banks of the River Ouse, the York Museum Gardens are “famed for their fantastic collection of trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs”.

Open from 9am to 6pm every day, the beautiful botanic gardens are an ideal (and idyllic) place for a gentle stroll or a picnic.

3. Visit York Castle Museum

Step back in time with a visit to the award-winning York Castle Museum.

The immersive and iconic Kirkgate is a recreation of a Vicotrian-era street. Each carefully restored shop brings a fascinating time period to life, with costumed guides explaining the history of the real businesses that operated in York between 1870 and 1901.

Tickets for seniors are £16 (£14.50 if booked in advance online).

4. Take a Ramble Along the Shambles

If you’d rather visit some real shops instead of recreations, a visit to the Shambles cannot be missed. One of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe, these cobblestone streets feel like they’ve been ripped from the pages of Harry Potter.

The perfect place for window shopping or to stop for some tea and cake with the grandkids.

5. All Aboard the National Railway Museum

Spark some memories of day trips past with a wander around the National Railway Museum. With a vast collection of locomotives, insightful exhibitions, and an immersive Virtual Reality experience, this is a great place to connect with the past and look to the future.

Admission to the National Railway Museum is free.

6. Enjoy the Beautiful Beningbrough Hall

Beningbrough Hall is a stunning Georgian Mansion boasting more than 300 years of history. A scenic 30-minute drive from the centre of York, it’s a popular day trip for all ages.

With sprawling, well-tended gardens and a variety of exhibition spaces, there’s plenty to see and do, both inside and out.

Tickets are £12 for adults (£13.20 with Gift Aid).

7. Take in a Show at the York Theatre Royal

Who doesn’t love a trip to the theatre? With a diverse range of shows year-round, the historic York Theatre Royal has something for everyone.

Pop along for summer matinee performances with the grandkids, or take in the yearly festive pantomime. The theatre is fully accessible, meaning even those with mobility issues can comfortably enjoy the show.
