On Sunday, the 15th of March, we enjoyed a fun-filled Mother’s Day celebration here at Fulford. Family and friends gathered to honour the ladies in their lives as we laid on a sumptuous afternoon tea with sandwiches, cakes, and bubbles.
When you have a loved one in care, days like Mother’s Day take on extra significance. It’s a chance to reconnect, spend quality time together, and show them how much you love them. But you don’t have to wait for special days to roll around each year. You can arrange to visit and celebrate your mum, grandmother, or another important mother figure in your life at any time.
Let’s take a look at a few ways you can keep the magic of Mother’s Day alive all year round.
5 ways you can celebrate your mother or grandmother when visiting them in a nursing home
1. Turn your visit into a spa day
It doesn’t have to be Mother’s Day or a birthday to pamper someone. Bring some hand lotion, nail polish, a soft brush, and a warm towel and give your loved one a gentle hand massage, do their nails, and brush their hair. This is a calming, nurturing activity and lets them know they’re cared for in a special way.
2. Pack an indoor picnic
You don’t have to throw a rug down and brave the outdoors to enjoy a picnic. Load up a hamper with goodies and bring the great outdoors inside. Sit by a window, share tea, coffee, sandwiches, cakes, and treats, and make a regular visit a little more memorable.
3. Organise a trip down memory lane
Speaking of memories, a fun way to make your visits more special is to bring family photo albums, holiday snaps, and souvenirs to reminisce over. Holding physical photographs is a tactile, sensory experience, and can trigger stronger emotions. Let your loved one share their recollections, tell stories, and spark discussions as you look back over shared experiences.
4. Listen to some favourite tunes
Music can be incredibly impactful, especially if your loved one is dealing with memory issues. Make a short playlist of their favourite songs, or songs from a meaningful moment in their lives (for example, the first dance at their wedding). You can choose to sit quietly and reflect or hum, sing, or dance along to the music together. You may see an emotional connection if they recognise the tune.
5. Bring the cinema to them
If your mother or grandmother loved going to the pictures, you can bring a little bit of the cinema to them. Download a few classic films onto your laptop or tablet, stock up on popcorn, and settle down for a movie day together.
